Callas

Callas is a small picturesque medieval village located on a hillside in the heart of Provence, 14 km east of Draguignan and just 33 km from the lovely beaches of the Mediterranean at Fréjus / Saint-Raphaël. Here are all the necessary necessities, including restaurants, cafes, grocery store, baker, butcher, and a tourist office.

Callas is a typical Provencal medieval village with narrow, winding alleys, cobbled stairways, and small squares with fountains. Callas does not offer the big sights, but of interest can i.e., mention the old town hall from 1623 with its typical wrought iron bell tower, Notre-Dame church with its tall bell tower and the ruins of an old castle from the 13th century, Pontevès. At the top of the town, you can admire the magnificent panoramic views over the Estérel mountains and down towards the Mediterranean. It is in the cafes on the town's main square that tourists and locals gather in the shade under the large plane trees.

Below the town is an old olive mill (moulin à l’huile), which also serves as a souvenir shop. In addition to olive oil, handmade products in olive wood and clay are sold. The old mill wheel no longer works, but the metal frame is beautifully decorated, and the old wooden slats are still intact.

South of the city you will find the impressive gorge, the Gorges de Pennafort, nestled between red wooded rock walls. A small path leads down to the bottom of the gorge where a river runs. The trip takes about 20 minutes on foot. Here you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water of the river, which springs from one large boulder to another. Above the gorge sits the beautiful 19th century chapel, the Chapelle de Pennafort.
